Freya

Social Media Assistant
Age - 25

After applying for a number of jobs, Freya discovered her passion for creativity and community engagement during her New to Nature placement at RSPB Cymru. As a Social Media Assistant, she got to experience working in a new sector, gained valuable skills and confidence to navigate her career path after university.

After completing her degree in International Relations, Freya found the transition into work challenging and wasn’t sure what direction to take. Balancing hospitality work while searching for opportunities, she felt drawn to New to Nature for its accessibility, hybrid-working setup, and entry-level structure.

Freya’s role at RSPB Cymru included checking social media platforms, responding to messages, collaborating with team members, and running data reports. However, her most impactful project was leading a video interview series showcasing people within the organisation. Freya created this project to highlight a different side of RSPB and aimed to share it across different platforms and events. This project enabled her to hone skills in project management, organisation, and creativity.

”Transitioning from a degree to a job is hard work and can feel incredibly daunting. I think programmes are essential for helping that transition."

Her placement revealed the creative side of environmental work and throughout the year Freya realised she particularly enjoyed the community engagement aspect of her role.

Looking ahead, Freya is eager to explore work centred around community and creativity. Although her career path is still unfolding, the New to Nature placement has given her the tools to take her next steps with confidence.

New to Nature is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the celebrations to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the King’s Coronation, delivered through a partnership of Groundwork, The King’s Trust, Disability Rights UK, Mission Diverse and the Youth Environmental Service.
