This role is a hands-on way to start a career in transport planning. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals to design road layouts, check traffic data, and help shape how people move through towns and cities.

While gaining skills on real projects, you’ll also study towards a recognised qualification - this is a Level 3 apprenticeship (roughly the same as studying for A-levels) managed by Leeds College of Building.

What it will involve?
You’ll help create designs for streets, junctions and walking and cycling routes using specialist software. You’ll support your team by reviewing traffic patterns, taking part in site visits, and keeping project records up to date. You’ll be learning every step of the way – working closely with your team and seeing the impact of your work in real places.

The apprenticeship usually lasts between 2 to 3 years and you'll receive a mix of in-person education and online training (travel and accommodation will be fully covered when you're studying away from home). At the end, you'll complete an assessment to qualify.

Is this role right for me?
You might enjoy this if you like maps, problem-solving or seeing how things are built and improved. If you’re good at staying organised, asking questions and working with others – and want to make streets and towns work better for everyone – this could be a great fit.

What skills will I use?

  • Staying organised and managing your time

  • Working as part of a team and asking for support when needed

  • Using attention to detail to help look over data, like checking traffic patterns and accident details

  • Observing and gathering information on site visits

  • Using digital tools like Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (you will be trained in how to use CAD)

How will I be helping protect our environment?
You’ll be helping design travel options that are safer, greener, and better for people – supporting walking, cycling, and less car-reliant ways of getting around. Your work will help communities become more connected and climate-friendly.

What’s great about working here
Rappor is a growing company with friendly teams who care about the places they work in. You’ll be supported in your learning and given responsibility as you grow. There’s space to develop, flexibility in how you work, and the chance to help shape real-world change.

Where could this role take me?
Once qualified, you would be able to register as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (MCIHT). You could move into a technician role and build a career in planning, transport or design – with options to keep learning and take on more responsibility over time.
