Are you a young person in Somerset passionate about nature and food? This unique 12-month paid placement offers a hands-on introduction to sustainable farming and community building. You’ll work across three local sites, learning to grow organic vegetables while helping connect people to the land and our local food system.
What it will involve?
This practical role splits your time between two growing sites and a community organisation. You’ll experience the full cycle of food production—from seed to harvest—while supporting community projects and children’s gardening clubs.
Some of the tasks you might be doing include:
Planting, weeding, and harvesting seasonal vegetables
Assisting with children’s gardening sessions at Skool Beanz
Packing organic veg boxes for local customers
Supporting community events and capturing project photos
Is this role right for me?
You might enjoy this role if you love being outdoors, don't mind getting your hands dirty, and want to learn by doing. If you enjoy working in small, friendly teams and cares about nature and community, we want to hear from you!
What skills will I use?
Food Growing: Mastering seasonal planting and vegetable harvesting techniques
Land Care: Learning to look after soil and outdoor spaces
Communication: Supporting children and volunteers in a calm, friendly way
Tool Safety: Using basic hand tools effectively with full training
Organisation: Managing your time and planning your weekly tasks
How will I be helping protect our environment?
You’ll be at the heart of regenerative agriculture, helping grow organic food that supports local biodiversity and soil health. By working with community-supported agriculture (CSA) and local food networks, you are reducing food miles and helping build a more resilient, nature-friendly food system right here in Somerset.
What’s great about working here
You’ll join a supportive, women-led team dedicated to making land-work more inclusive. We value creativity, care, and "deep listening" to our community. This isn't just a job; it's a pioneering opportunity to build your confidence and help create a fairer, more connected rural future.
Where could this role take me?
This placement is a perfect springboard into careers in commercial horticulture, environmental education, or community organising. You’ll gain a wider view of local food systems and receive dedicated support from the Youth Environmental Service to help plan your next steps in the green sector.
