This role helps grassroots environmental organisations in Somerset and Dorset tell their stories and connect with local communities.

Working across three community-focused organisations: This Living Place, Dorset Community Energy and Wessex Community Assets, you'll document local changemakers, share inspiring projects, and help people understand the environmental work happening around them. It's about making sure the brilliant community-led work gets the visibility it deserves.

What it will involve?
You'll spend time meeting people involved in local environmental projects and helping share what they're up to. This might involve visiting a community garden, interviewing people about their solar panel installation, or documenting a house retrofit project. You'll write stories, take photos, create social media posts, and help with newsletters. Some days you'll be helping out at events and meeting people, other days you’ll be behind the scenes - reading, researching, or helping us understand what’s happening in our region.

Location and travel
This role is based in Somerset and Dorset, with a mix of home working, local travel, and remote collaboration.

Important: Public transport in this area is limited, so you’ll need your own transport but we’ll cover all travel costs.

Is this role right for me?
You might enjoy this if you like chatting to people, hearing their stories, and finding creative ways to share them. If you're curious about your local area and care about the environment, this could be perfect. You'll need to be comfortable working both on your own and with small teams, and happy travelling around rural Somerset and Dorset. This role is perfect for someone who wants variety and is proactive, organised and open with communication.

What skills will I use?

  • Writing clearly and communicating ideas

  • Organising tasks and managing your time

  • Being friendly and confident speaking to people

  • Using tools like Canva, social media and Google Drive

  • Asking good questions and listening carefully

How will I be helping protect our environment?
You’ll help shine a light on people making positive changes where they live – whether that’s growing food, creating green homes, or powering their communities with solar. Your work will inspire others and support grassroots projects tackling climate and social issues.

What’s great about working here
This is a new and exciting collaboration across three small organisations who've joined forces to create a meaningful, well-supported role. You'll work across small teams where your ideas genuinely matter, getting a behind-the-scenes view of running mission-driven organisations. Each week will look a little different and because we're small teams, you'll help shape how we work rather than just following instructions.

The role blends home working and regular meetups, with travel to community projects across rural Somerset and Dorset.

Where could this role take me?
This role could lead to careers in community engagement, communications, environmental work, or project coordination. You also might discover a passion for renewable energy or community organising that shapes your future path.
